In Chat 29 of ChatGPT and ME, I was looking at whether AI and humans working together created a different form of intelligence. GPT put forward the idea that working together they form an extended cognitive system. Andy Clark and David Chalmers argued something similar in their “extended mind” thesis. "A notebook isn’t intelligent, but the human-plus-notebook system accomplishes cognition neither alone could perform in quite the same way." On the whole I felt the end result was a successful integration of AI and human creativity (perhaps not so much an "extended mind" as an "extended hand") producing images that pushed the initial concepts further but remained true to the original.
The final images could have been created with more conventional analog or non-AI digital techniques. But it would not have been done anywhere near as quickly or efficiently as it was with the help of the AI.
Up to now ChatGPT and ME has mostly been a kind of abstract exploration into the workings and capabilities of AI. GPT has shown it is impressive in generating creative content and assisting with various tasks. I wanted to see whether it could be integrated into a workflow that would extend initial design concepts and enhance them without losing the original intent and feeling. Could we work together without GPT overriding the original vision? I had a number of pencil sketches I did during the production of THE KIDS IN THE HALL in the early 1990s. The sketches were fed into GPT's prompt with the request to "Create an image in a photorealistic style using this pencil sketch as a base." - along with any context about the specific sketch. Once GPT had created its image I edited, composited, and color graded in Photoshop to produce the final image. I then added a thumbnail of the original sketch to the final images. The prompts used are shown after each of the images.
Clicking on any of the images will bring up an overlay allowing you to compare GPT's output from the prompt with the final image after my edits and color grading. Slide the centre divider left or right to see more of either version.
